The normal time gap, between bowel movements varies a lot from person to person. For some people having bowel movements thrice a day is normal, whereas some will have it two to three times in a week. Going more than three days without a bowel movement is considered abnormal. Infrequent bowel movements, difficulty during defecation, difficulty during defecation and finally having sensation of incomplete bowel evacuation, all of this are symptoms of constipation. The food we eat moves through our elementary canal in peristaltic motion. If this motion is disturbed in the colon, then we experience constipation. It takes few days to recover from acute constipation.

Why do people have Constipation?

People of any age group can fall prey to constipation and there are various reasons that can lead to this. Lifestyle and food habits, both play a major role in this. Human body is a very complicated organic machine; every aspect of living is inseparably attached with other. There are many reasons, as to why one could end up getting constipation.

Firstly, not drinking enough water has directly been linked to constipation. Seventy five percent of our body consists of water. Hence, lack of water is bound to affect our body chemistry, in many ways. It will affect our digestive system adversely and will result in having irregular movement in colon and dry stools. Hence, we have to make sure that we drink at least two liters of water every day.

Our choice of food has got a lot to do with this. Over the period of last few decades, people all over the world have started consuming junk foods and there has been a drastic rise in number of people suffering from constipation. Now what are these junk foods? Let’s simply say, food that are low in nutritional value and have detrimental effect on our health, fall under the category of junk foods. In every nook and corner of any American town, you can find fast food joints, where you can get burgers, sandwiches, aerated drinks, deep fried meat and chips. The ingredients that are used to prepare these food items are not natural and the food items are processed with harmful chemicals, so that they last longer. Most importantly, these fast foods are very low in fiber content. Well, fiber is a very important part of our diet. We have to make sure, we intake enough amount of fiber on a daily basis to ward off constipation.

Another major reason for having constipation is using certain medicines. These over-the -counter medicines can cause occasional constipation. Medications like antacids, antidepressants, cold medicines, painkillers have been linked with constipation. 1. Amalaki

All you need to do is, take one or two of this fruit, cut them into small pieces and make juice out of them. Drink this juice with lukewarm water before going to bed. Any kind of citrus fruits are high on vitamin C, anti-oxidants and they are very good cleansing agents, as well. You need to mix two table spoons of lemon juice and one table spoon of honey in lukewarm water and drink it early in the morning, with an empty stomach.

3. Olive Oil

Olive oil is believed to have many medicinal properties. It stimulates the digestive system and makes bowel movement easy. You can mix one table spoon of Olive oil with a teaspoon of lemon juice and have it regularly, in order to get rid of constipation.

4. Raisins
